Preventive Health Resources

AmeriHealth Caritas Iowa partners with our providers to prevent member illness and disease through preventive care. Preventive care includes a broad range of services, including:

  • Screening tests.
  • Counseling.
  • Immunizations/vaccines.

Immunizations

  • Providers are required to administer immunizations in accordance with the recommended childhood immunization schedule for the United States, or when medically necessary for the member's health.
  • For members younger than 21 years, Providers are required to administer all vaccines for which the member is eligible at each visit.
  • Providers are required to participate in the Vaccines for Children Program (VFC).

Immunization schedules (childhood, adolescent and adult)

Vaccines For Children program

Members 18 years old and younger should get their vaccines through the VFC. Vaccinations covered by the VFC program will not be reimbursed by AmeriHealth Caritas Iowa. Providers are expected to plan for a sufficient supply of vaccines and are required to report the use of VFC vaccines immunizations by billing with the appropriate procedure codes and modifier.

About our schedules
AmeriHealth Caritas Iowa has adopted the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Guide to Clinical Preventive Services childhood and adolescent immunization schedule, approved by:

  • The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
  • The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

The adult immunization schedule is approved by:

  • The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
  • The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
